Frequently Asked Questions - (FAQ)
Aside from the obvious (finding players, buying equipment and uniforms, setting up practices, etc.), there are 4 basic functions that new teams need to perform.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO REGISTER MY TEAM? Teams need to register with at least one of the sport's sanctioning bodies. The National Softball Association (NSA) is one of those bodies. The cost to register your team with NSA is $20. By registering with NSA you become part of a nationwide group of youth softball teams. Your team will be place on a mailing list for important information, have the ability to purchase team insurance, be able to participate in NSA tournaments and leagues, receive a rule book as well as other benefits from being part of the NSA program. To register your team with NSA, you’ll need to go to the Online Registration section of this website, read the instructions, then click on the link found there to begin the procedure. You will be given a NSA sanction number once you’ve completed the simple registration process.
WHAT IS INVOLVED WITH PURCHASING TEAM INSURANCE? Every team that participates in even one tournament needs to purchase team insurance. Simply put, none of softball's sanctioning bodies will allow a team to participate that doesn't have team insurance. You can purchase your team insurance through the NSA carrier, Thilman & Filippini Insurance (T&F), by calling Marla Rucker at 312-527-7043. You don’t have to purchase your insurance through T&F, however most other carriers only less liability coverage than T&F, which provides $5 million. If you purchase from another company, keep in mind the minimum that is required to participate in NSA is $2 million. The NSA policy also provides accident insurance on a secondary basis. The insurance cost for one team through the NSA insurance ranges between $70-100 if that team is part of at least a 4-team program or league. For individual teams or groups less than four, the cost is between $130-180, depending on the age bracket. Teams that purchase insurance on or after August 1 are charged half price. All policies purchased during the year expire on December 31. In order to purchase team insurance from T&F, teams will need to be registered through NSA and will need to provide T&F with their sanction number upon application. HOW DO I ENTER MY ROSTER ONLINE?? First you’ll need to register your team online, submit the $20 sanction fee and receive your sanction number. Once that’s been done, you can go to the Online Roster section of the website, read the instructions (particularly the section “Information Regarding the Online Roster”, then click on the link at the top and proceed. Once the roster has been completely entered, you need to print off a copy, have the players and parents sign it. The signed copy should carried with you at all tournaments. Make sure you keep a copy of the signed roster for your own records.
HOW DO I REGISTER MY TEAM FOR NSA TOURNAMENTS? Check out our Tournaments Page. By selecting the event that interests you, you'll see all the particular spec's on that tournament, including who the tournament director is and how you go about registering. It's important to give the director a call or email first to make sure that there are still openings in the tournament.
CAN NSA REGISTERED TEAMS PARTICIPATE IN OTHER ORGANIZATION'S TOURNAMENTS? Absolutely. In fact, we encourage teams to play in tournaments run by other organizations. Although we believe NSA will offer your team the most opportunity overall, we also understand that each weekend is different, and depending on your team's situation another organization might provide you a better solution for that particular weekend. Contrary to what many people might think, the directors of each sanctioning body do get along with one another and help each other in every way they can. For the most part, the various associations work with, not against, each other.
